If you’re planning a visit to Northumberland’s coast, an Inner Farne Island boat trip with us at Billy Shiel Farne Island Boats Limited is a must. Our popular boat tour to Inner Farne gives you the chance to experience one of the UK’s most impressive wildlife spectacles, up close and unforgettable.
This trip lasts approximately 2½ to 3 hours in total, including an hour ashore on Inner Farne itself. We cruise around the full Farne Islands group, offering exceptional views of thousands of cliff-nesting seabirds and the famous grey seal colonies that call the islands home. On the way, you’ll also travel the historic route taken by Grace Darling and her father during their dramatic 1838 sea rescue—a journey made even more vivid by our onboard commentary.
Inner Farne is managed by the National Trust and offers the best opportunity for close-up encounters with puffins, Arctic terns, guillemots, razorbills and more during the breeding season. During your hour on the island, you can explore marked paths and see seabirds nesting just feet away. It’s an extraordinary place that brings you into the heart of British wildlife in a way few locations can.
Please note that your boat fare does not include the National Trust landing fee. This fee is payable directly at the National Trust kiosk beside our booking office on the harbour before your departure. All landings are subject to the skipper’s discretion and are not guaranteed. In the event that we’re unable to land due to weather or sea conditions, your trip will still include a full tour of the Farne Islands, transformed into a dedicated 2½ to 3 hour non-landing bird and seal watching cruise.
We advise allowing a minimum of 3 hours in your schedule to enjoy this experience fully. Our trips are suitable for all ages and offer photographers, bird watchers and nature lovers an unbeatable opportunity to witness the Farne Islands at their best.
At Billy Shiel Farne Island Boats Limited, we’ve been operating trips for over 70 years and pride ourselves on sharing the beauty and wildlife of these islands with visitors from around the world.
